In  2015, The Sun relaunched their popular Sunemployment job board on Madgex's new responsive platform. Mike Barnard, Content and Product Manager at NewsUK explains why they upgraded their job board and the impact it has had on the business.


We’re delighted with the new-look Sunemployment site which launched in July 2015. The re-design is now in line with the The Sun's branding and makes for a seamless transition between our flagship content site and the job board. As part of the upgrade we introduced the first-ever self-service portal for Sunemployment clients which has delivered above expectations, providing an additional revenue stream that continues to beat our monthly targets.

With a responsively designed job board, we have a platform that is future-proof and responds to the needs of our audience with visits from mobile now accounting for nearly 50% of traffic. The new revenue stream of self-service means the future outlook of Sunemployment is positive.

The old Sunemployment site was no longer in-line with the style of the new The Sun site which was responsive with a compelling design. We worked with the Madgex designers to produce a job board design which closely matched The Sun site.

The new Sunemployment site was launched on July 9th with a homepage takeover on The Sun leading to our third-highest month for visits in 2015. Beating these visit figures was October when we ran our annual Sunemployment Roadshow campaign (of touring five cities offering on-the-spot jobs backed by print and online coverage) and the peak job-hunting month of January.

Self-service surpassing expectations

Our new Sunemployment site enables clients the option to buy online job listings through an innovative self-service platform.  In the first six months, the Sunemployment self-service has surpassed expectations, delivering revenue that is 38% up on our initial targets. We’re confident that this level of performance will continue through to the end of our financial year in June, and we’ll be able to apply a sizeable year-on-year increase to revenue targets for our next year.

The new site has given us the opportunity to support The Sun’s brand new ‘Best of British Awards - The UK’s Top Companies to Work For’, celebrating the companies that help make the UK great again. The Sunemployment site currently hosts the application form encouraging British companies to take part on an article page (found at which will be updated with the full listing when published in The Sun.
